WILLIAMSPORT, PA (September 13, 2022) -- The Susquehanna University women's tennis team got two wins from senior
Chelsea Kneedler Tuesday afternoon, but the River Hawks couldn't hold on to a 2-1 lead after doubles in dropping a non-conference match with Lycoming College 5-4 to start the 2022-23 season.
The River Hawks (0-1) started the match off strong with an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles by
Isabella Scappaticci and
Grace Tepes, knocking off Rei Saar and Hannah Seebold. The match lead for SU was doubled at No. 2 doubles, as Kneedler and
Kristen Bair dispatched of their opponents 8-2. Lycoming (1-0) got a win back at No. 3 doubles, as
Eliza Mahoney and
Olivia Tepes were topped 8-4.
The Warriors tied the match at two wins apiece as singles' play started, as Emma Kelchner topped
Olivia Tepes 6-2, 6-0. Lycoming took its first lead of the day at No. 1 singles, as Seebold bested
Grace Tepes 6-2, 6-4. The edge was short lived, as Kneedler knocked off Haley Seebold 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 singles.
Scappaticci would battle hard at No. 2 singles, as she took the opening set 6-1 before falling in the second 6-3. In the super-tiebreaker, Emily Wolfgang would earn the victory for Lycoming with a 10-6 win to put the Warriors up 4-3. Mahoney kept hope alive for SU, as she earned a 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (5) win at No. 5 singles to tie the match at four.
The team victory would come down the No. 3 singles, which once again went to a super tiebreaker. Bair won the first set 7-5, but fell 6-0 in the second set to force the third stanza. Saar would control the super tiebreaker, as she posted a 10-6 win to clinch the victory for the Warriors.
