SELINSGROVE, PA (September 16, 2022) – The Susquehanna University Men's Soccer team took the field on Friday night in search of their first win of the 2022 season, hosting Widener University on Sassafras Field. That win would prove to elude them again, despite a strong effort from the River Hawks, they were unable to break through the defense of the Pride and suffered a 1-0 defeat.
Widener began on the front foot, piling the pressure on early and forcing some stellar saves from junior goalkeeper Hunter McDonald to keep the match scoreless. The Pride would outshoot SU 8-2 in the first half and broke through to put a shot past McDonald in the 41st minute and take the lead.
The second half saw Susquehanna start strong in search of an equalizer, with the River Hawks getting the first two shots of the half and Max Paczewski forcing a save from the Widener keeper to keep the Pride in front. The momentum would swing back to the visitors as the half progressed and SU were unable to connect enough passes together through the midfield to produce an attacking move that could yield an equalizer.
The match would prove to be a highly physical affair on both sides, with 19 fouls and three yellow cards between the two teams. A hard-fought match on both sides, Widener's ability to sustain offensive pressure for longer periods proved to be the difference maker.
SU will hit the road for their next match, visiting Alvernia University on Wednesday, September 21 for a 7 pm kickoff. With Landmark Conference play fast approaching, the River Hawks will be eager to find winning form.
