Men's Soccer Finds the Net But Can't Hold Lead at Alvernia

READING, PA (September 21, 2022) – The Susquehanna Men's soccer team visited Alvernia University on Wednesday evening, in search of their first win of the 2022 season before they begin the Landmark Conference campaign. Despite taking the lead midway through the first half, they ultimately couldn't defend it and fell 3-1 at the final whistle.

The offenses were prolific for both teams from the opening whistle, with the two teams combining for 21 shots in the first half alone. They went back and forth until the 25th minute when sophomore Max Paczewski latched onto a ball played over top of most of Alvernia's defense, muscled off a couple defenders and broke into the box to put a well-placed finish past the keeper. The goal broke a scoreless stretch for SU that spanned their previous three matches.

Alvernia would return fire in the waning moments of the first half, scoring in the 45th minute after some slick passing outside the box between a couple of Alvernia attackers split the River Hawk defense. The teams took the 1-1 score into halftime, but the late equalizer seemed to spark the Golden Wolves, who came out of the locker room and took control of the momentum of the game. They would double SU's shot total in the second half, tallying eight shots to Susquehanna's four. They broke through to take the lead in the 78th minute and grabbed an insurance goal in the closing moments.

Alvernia totaled 19 shots and 13 on goal, forcing SU keeper Gerrit Stech into 10 saves on the night, a strong performance but ultimately not enough to keep the River Hawks in the match.

SU will now prepare to begin Landmark Conference play on Saturday, September 24, hosting Elizabethtown College at 1 pm. After a fourth place finish in the conference last season, they'll hope to find winning ways in the coming weeks.
