SELINSGROVE, PA (September 17, 2022) – The Susquehanna University Women's Soccer team again took the field at Sassafras Multipurpose Field on Saturday afternoon, after turning in a good performance at home mid-week to take a 2-0 victory over Wilkes University. That positive momentum continued for the River Hawks, as a strong second half lifted them to a 3-0 victory over the Wolverines of Grove City College.
The offenses were nearly silent to begin the first half of the match, with only one shot registered in the half, courtesy of SU's first-year forward Kameron Watkins, who hit a low shot from just inside the box that was comfortably corralled by Grove City's goalkeeper. Neither team would force a corner kick in the first half either, as much of the period was dominated by Susquehanna possession while they probed to find an opening in the Wolverines' defense.
The second half would prove to be much more action-packed, with SU registering eight shots while Grove City had their only two shots of the game in the second half. The first of Susquehanna's three goals came in the 53rd minute when graduate defender Marley Clendenin got on the end of a brilliantly hit corner kick by senior Emily Wertz to fire a header home at the back post. The pressure would continue, much of it supplied by Wertz, who peppered the Grove City goal with shots before finding paydirt in the 60th minute, with a majestic shot fired from outside the box, which came off her left foot perfectly and found the back of the net, crossing the line after grazing the bottom of the crossbar.
With a firm lead now in place, SU kept their foot on the gas and continued to create chances, as Clendenin forced a save on another shot off a corner and a few minutes later Maggie Morrison put another shot on goal. The third goal came in the 84th minute as junior Mikela Florio added to her own goal tally after jumping onto a ball in box and firing past the keeper, scoring her fourth of the season which ties Wertz for the team lead. Senior Carlie Marquette turned in a strong performance in goal, saving the Wolverines' only shot on goal and serving as a strong defensive presence in the few instances when Grove City could enter her 18-yard box.
Susquehanna will hit the road on Wednesday, September 21 for their third road game of the 2022 season, hoping to get their first road victory and bump their win streak to three. They'll face the Warriors of Lycoming College, kicking off at 4 pm. The River Hawks will then return to home soil for their Landmark Conference opener on Saturday, September 24, where they'll host Elizabethtown College, getting to kick off conference play against the Blue Jay squad that knocked SU out of the 2021 Landmark playoffs in the semifinals, winning on penalty kicks. That match will kick off at 4 pm as well.
