Women's Soccer Continues Shutout Streak With 3-0 Victory in River Derby

WILLIAMSPORT, PA (September 21, 2022) – After a strong pair of results saw the Susquehanna Women's Soccer team earn two shutout victories last week, the River Hawks traveled to Williamsport on Wednesday afternoon to face Lycoming College in this year's iteration of the River Derby. The shutout streak continued for SU as they produced a dominant display away from home, taking a 3-0 victory over the Warriors.

The match swung in the favor of Susquehanna from the outset, as they found the back of the net with the very first shot of the match in only the fourth minute. Marley Clendenin scored a breathtaking goal, firing a powerful blast into the back of the net from nearly 40 yards out, receiving a pass from Emily Wertz just past the midfield circle into Lycoming's half of the field. The goal will undoubtedly go down as one of the must remarkable scored this season.

SU continued to pile on the pressure after taking the one goal lead, tallying eight more shots in the half and forcing six saves from Lycoming's goalkeeper. Wertz, Cierra Getz, Gillian Maack, and Clendenin all tallied shots on goal in the half.

The second half would prove to be similar to the first, with Susquehanna dominating possession and producing numerous offensive chances, while Lycoming could only register a single shot in the half. The River Hawks' second goal would come in the 52nd minute, again in stunning fashion. Maack would take control of the ball in the midfield and go on a majestic run through most of the Lycoming players before reaching the 18-yard box and firing a left-footed shot perfectly into the right side of the net, doubling the lead. The bombardment continued as SU fired off 11 shots in just the second half, racking up 20 total and 12 on goal.

The final goal would again come from Maack, who got on the end of an Emily Wertz corner in the 84th minute and headed the ball home to complete her scoring brace while also giving Wertz her second assist of the day.

Susquehanna has now fired off three shutout wins in a row with their Landmark Conference opener next on the schedule. They'll host Elizabethtown College in a rematch of last season's conference semifinal matchup that saw the Blue Jays win on penalty kicks and upset number 2 seed Susquehanna. They'll kickoff on September 24 at 4 pm and look to avenge last year's loss and continue their win streak.
