SELINSGROVE, PA (September 24, 2022) – The men's soccer team began their 2022 Landmark Conference play on Saturday afternoon, still seeking their first win of the season and welcoming the Blue Jays of Elizabethtown College to Sassafras Field. Despite a tough back-and-forth affair, the teams remained deadlocked, and the match ended in a 0-0 draw.
The Blue Jays controlled the match in the first half, keeping more possession and tallying six shots to SU's two. They would prove to be inefficient in their attack though, putting only one shot on goal which was saved by first-year goalkeeper Tony Burns, who earned the first start of his collegiate career.
The second half saw a change in momentum as the River Hawks took control of possession and put their offense in gear, producing seven shots in the second half and forcing four saves from Elizabethtown's goalkeeper. Both teams pushed hard for a potential winner in the waning minutes, swapping chances and racking up corner kicks and shots. Burns picked up a second save on Elizabethtown's only shot on goal in the half. The Blue Jays totaled 10 shots in the game, but only two on goal, unable to further test the inexperienced goalkeeper. Meanwhile, the River Hawks totaled nine shots with four on goal, testing E-Town a bit further but ultimately failed to break through.
Sophomore Max Paczewski led the team in shots, tallying two on goal and four total. Senior Michael Morelli and junior Adrian Dilascio also tallied a shot on goal each.
The River Hawks remain winless in 2022 but have broken a streak of four straight losses with today's result. Now 0-5-3, they'll have a full week to prepare for their next match, when they travel to face Landmark opponent Moravian University on Saturday, October 1st, kicking off at 1 pm.
