Morton Gets Late Winner To Give River Hawks The Win in Landmark Opener

SELINSGROVE, PA (September 24, 2022) – The Women's Soccer team hosted Elizabethtown College on Saturday afternoon for their Landmark Conference season opener and managed to continue their win streak on home soil, also turning in their fourth shutout in a row as they took a 1-0 victory over the Blue Jays.

Both teams found their way into the match slowly, with the offenses struggling to break through the final line of the respective defenses. SU looked the more likely to score from the beginning, with the River Hawks tallying six shots in the first half, with four of them forcing saves from the Elizabethtown goalkeeper. Meanwhile, first-year Susquehanna goalkeeper Paisley Tornatore looked poised as ever in net, saving two in the first half and another in the second for her three total saves, not being called on often but delivering well when needed. With neither team managing to score in the first half, both came out after halftime with increased urgency in hopes of breaking the tie.

SU kicked into a higher gear in the second half, ramping up their push on offense and bossing possession, limiting the Blue Jays' chances to find the scoreboard. They had nine shots in the second half while E-Town had only two, with the decisive shot coming in the 79th minute. Junior Delaney Morton took the chance on a ball that bounced right to her in front of the net after a cross from the left side swung into the box. Morton placed a well-struck shot into the left side of the goal, just past the outstretched hands on the Blue Jays' keeper, who had come up with numerous highlight reel saves prior to the goal.

Senior Emily Wertz led the way in shots with five, including three on goal. Fellow senior Gillian Maack had three of her own, with two on net. But it would prove to be Morton's shot, her only of the game, that would be the one to get the job done.

Having now put together a streak of four shutout wins, Susquehanna has improved their record to 6-3 and begun their Landmark Conference play on the right foot. They now face an extended stretch of away matches after playing six of their first nine matches at home. They'll play their next five on the road, first taking on York College (PA) on Wednesday, September 28 at 7 pm. Their next Landmark match will take place at Moravian University on October 1, kicking off at 4 pm.
