Field Hockey Opens Landmark Play With a Win at E-Town

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA (September 24, 2022) – The Susquehanna University Field Hockey team hit the road on Saturday for their Landmark Conference opener, traveling to face the Blue Jays of Elizabethtown College. Fresh off their upset of ranked opponent York College (PA) earlier in the week, the River Hawks continued their positive momentum with a victory over Elizabethtown, the final score being 3-1.

SU set the tone in the opening moments, as they pushed the ball straight down the field and into E-Town's defensive zone, crossed the ball in from the right, and Sarah McAndrews jumped onto the loose ball in front of net, putting it into the back of the cage and giving the River Hawks the lead just 34 seconds into the match.

The offense continued the push throughout the first half, tallying six shots to the Blue Jays' two. The second goal came halfway through the second period as Rebecca Ripans notched a goal to double SU's advantage.

Both offenses were firing in half two as the match opened up on both ends, with E-Town searching for a chance to on the scoreboard and Susquehanna getting plenty more chances for a third goal. That goal came early in the third period as Sophia Prata got a chance on goal, had her initial shot saved, but got hold of her own rebound and put it in the cage to make the score 3-0. A few minutes later, the Blue Jays managed to finally get one past SU's netminder Mackenzie Bross, who made five saves on the day.

Each team produced three shots in the fourth period, but neither found another goal and the scoreline stayed 3-1 in favor of SU. Prata led the way with four shots in the game, all of which were on goal.

The result starts Susquehanna on the right foot for Landmark play and gives the team two straight victories, now 5-3 overall. They're also a stellar 5-0 on the road, which bodes well as their next two matches take them on the road. They'll face Misericordia University on Tuesday, September 27 at 7 pm, before they take on Neumann University on Thursday, September 29 at 4 pm.
