DALLAS, PA (September 27, 2022) – Susquehanna Field Hockey hit the road on Tuesday evening to face Misericordia University after opening Landmark Conference play with a win over Elizabethtown just a few days prior on Saturday the 24th. They continued their winning ways and dominance on the road as they bested Misericordia 3-2, their sixth road win of the season and third win in a row overall, making them now 6-3 on the year.
The River Hawks produced a dominant display on the road, generating persistent and effective offense throughout the night, totaling a remarkable 27 shots, with 15 on goal. The Cougars tallied eight shots in comparison with six of those on net. SU also earned 17 penalty corners to Misericordia's four.
It took a little over eight minutes for Susquehanna to notch a score, as on their third penalty corner of the game, an initial shot from Katie Bucher was saved but eventually fell to Kari Schmidt, who was able to pass across the face of goal to a waiting Sophia Prata, who buried her fourth goal of the season and gave SU the lead. Just over two minutes later, the River Hawks would double their lead with a beautifully executed offensive break, as Ashley Schreffler pushed the ball into the offensive zone and was able to find a crossing pass to Sarah McAndrews, who scored the team's second goal while also scoring in her third game in a row.
Misericordia would not lie down quietly though, as they ran straight down the field from the ensuing restart and scored a goal of their own, bringing the lead back down to one.
Susquehanna would continue to heap on the pressure throughout the second and third periods but were unable to score again until the final frame. Right from the start of the period they were in the offensive zone, with first-year Emma Campitelli forcing back-to-back saves on shots before the team earned two consecutive penalty corners. The Cougars committed and infraction while defending the second corner and SU was awarded a penalty stroke chance. Annalee Smith stepped up to take it, and as usual buried it with aplomb, registering her sixth goal of the campaign, already nearing her season total of seven from last season that saw her earn Landmark Defensive Player of the Year honors.
The Cougars again answered in short order, scoring a second goal a few minutes later to tighten the score again despite SU's overall dominance. The River Hawks renewed their pressure in the final minutes, looking more likely to score a fourth than Misericordia did to tie the game. Ultimately, the score remained 3-2 in Susquehanna's favor and they came away with the victory.
The River Hawks will have a chance to continue their undefeated run on the road on Thursday as they face Neumann University at 4 pm. They'll then return to home turf on Saturday, October 1 to play their next Landmark Conference fixture, hosting Moravian University at 1 pm.
