YORK, PA (September 28, 2022) – The Susquehanna University Women's Soccer team hit the road on Wednesday night on a four-game shutout win streak, preparing to test it against stiff non-conference opposition in York College (PA). In one of their more closely contested matches of the 2022 season, they kept that streak alive with a 1-0 victory over the Spartans, moving SU to 7-3 on the season and starting their five-game road trip on the right note.
The River Hawks jumped on the first opportunity to take the lead and made it stick just nine minutes into the match, as a failed clearance by the York defense was claimed by forward Delaney Morton, who scored her second goal in as many games and tallied what would ultimately prove to be the match winner and only goal of the night. SU kept up the pressure after taking the lead, tallying five shots and two corners to York's two and zero respectively, but their only other shot on goal in the half, off the foot of Emily Wertz, was saved by the York goalkeeper. Meanwhile, the Spartans searched for a goal of their own but were continually stymied by first-year goalkeeper Paisley Tornatore, who turned in a strong performance to earn the shutout.
She was called upon for seven saves, particularly in the second half where she made five of them, as York grew increasingly desperate in their search for a game-tying score. The Spartans took control of momentum in the second half, with nine shots and five on goal in the frame, along with four corner kicks. Tornatore and the River Hawk defense were up to the challenge though and preserved the one-goal advantage. Susquehanna's offense saw a few chances of their own for a second goal in the second half, tallying seven shots and forcing three saves. Ultimately, the sole tally would be enough to see out the victory.
With their win and shutout streak now at a remarkable five games, SU's next stop on the road takes them to a Landmark Conference opponent, as they'll face Moravian University on Saturday, October 1 at 4 pm. Having taken a home victory over Elizabethtown College in their conference opener, the River Hawks will hope to continue their streaks while simultaneously grabbing another key conference win.
