BROOKLYN, NY (September 23, 2022) – Susquehanna Volleyball began their weekend trip through the northeast on Friday night with a stop in NYC for a match with No. 9 NYU. Despite winning the first set, SU was ultimately unable to hold off the Violets and fell 3-1, with set scores of 25-21, 12-25, 18-25, and 19-25.
The River Hawks turned in a strong performance to take the set one victory, hitting. 349 in the set and tallying 16 kills with only one error. Unfortunately, they were unable to sustain that momentum through the rest of the match and set two saw them produce a -.212 hitting percentage, a season low hitting percentage in a set. The mistakes added up and NYU was able to keep a steady stream of kills while taking advantage of the free points from SU mistakes. The momentum loss seemed to hit the River Hawks hard after the second set, as they would go down in three straight sets despite improved hitting in the third and fourth sets. The Violets' advantages in service aces and blocks helped keep them just out in front of the River Hawks in the final two sets with SU unable to claim a lead at any point after leading in the first set. NYU tallied 10 aces to Susquehanna's three and 13 blocks to SU's eight.
Ryan Rorls led the way for Susquehanna in kills, tallying 14 to supplant Rosina Esposito from her usual position as the top kill scorer. Esposito had 12, while Emily Kowalski followed just behind with 11. Despite multiple double-digit kill tallies, the inefficiency on offense proved to undermine the River Hawks in the long run, as Rorls hit just .200, Esposito finished at .057, and Kowalski led the three with her mark of .304. Keira Roach topped the team in assists as usual, with 36 as her total. Esposito had two of the team's three service aces, with Lexie Kalligonis registering the other.
Susquehanna will continue their trip on Saturday as they head further north to Connecticut, where they'll face No. 16 Wesleyan University and No. 24 Tufts University, at 2:30 and 5:00 pm respectively, with Wesleyan serving as host for both matches.
