SELINSGROVE, PA (September 4, 2022) -- Swarthmore College's Martina Kampel scored on a penalty stroke eight minutes into the second half, notching the only goal in a 1-0 victory for the Garnet over the Susquehanna University field hockey team in non-conference action from Sassafras Field.
The River Hawk defensive unit was stout all day against a pressing Swarthmore (2-0) squad, consistently pushing the play out of the circle. SU's first real chance came with just under four minutes to play in the first quarter, as a
Kari Schmidt attempt whizzed wide of the target.
Swarthmore started to swing the possession in their favor in the second quarter, nearly scoring in the 22nd minute but graduate student
Annalee Smith made a defensive save on a Grace Twitchell shot. In the final minute, Garnet midfield Callie Cho had a solid opportunity in front of goal but SU senior keeper
Mackenzie Bross was up to the task as the game went to halftime scoreless.
In the third quarter, the deciding sequence came in the 39th minute as back-to-back shots from Swarthmore resulted in a penalty stroke being awarded. On the attempt, Bross faked right but Kampel fired right into the cage for the lone tally of the afternoon.
Minutes later, Susquehanna had another strong chance to equalize in the 40th minute as a Schmidt missed just right. In the fourth quarter,
Sophia Prata broke into open in front of the goal but she couldn't quite get a shot off. That would be the best chance over the last 15 minutes for the River Hawks, as the Garnet held on for the win.
The visitors outshot Susquehanna 14-3 on the afternoon, while the Garnet posted a 9-2 edge in penalty corners. Schmidt and Smith posted defensive saves for SU, while Bross finished with three saves.
Rebecca Ripans also took a shot for the River Hawks Sunday.
Kampel led the way offensively with her goal and a contest-high four shots. Cassandra Conklin made one save in earning her first collegiate shutout.
