SU Completes Comeback On the Road To Get First Win of the Season

CARLISLE, PA (September 7, 2022) – The Susquehanna University Field Hockey team earned their first win of the 2022 season on Wednesday night, staging an impressive comeback to take a 3-2 victory on the road at Dickinson College. After dropping their first two contests to Franklin & Marshall College and Swarthmore College at home last week, the team showed renewed grit and energy in earning the win over the Red Devils.

The game began with Dickinson on the front foot, with the Red Devils having four shots to Susquehanna's two in the first period. They also earned three penalty corners to the River Hawks' one. The scoring breakthrough came in the final minute of period one, with Dickinson earning a penalty stroke opportunity and burying it in the cage to take the lead. Now trailing, Susquehanna would begin to fight to change the momentum of the game and search out an equalizer.

The game went to halftime with the score still 1-0 in Dickinson's favor, but this would change quickly in the opening minutes of the second half. The River Hawks produced a relentless scoring run, beginning with a penalty stroke goal of their own only four minutes into the third period. Reigning Landmark Defensive Player of the Year Annalee Smith pocketed the opportunity and tied the game. Susquehanna would not be satisfied with a tie though and produced two more goals in quick succession to take the lead of the game. Rebecca Ripans would pounce on a rebounding shot attempt in the 40th minute and fire home to give the River Hawks the lead, then just three minutes later, Sophia Prata jumped on a blocked shot by Dickinson to bury the second chance effort and increase the lead. All told, Susquehanna would produce nine shots in the third period alone, finishing with 14 total and eight on frame in the contest. Dickinson responded with a goal in the fourth period from a penalty corner, but ultimately could not close the gap any further and SU saw out the 3-2 victory.

With this game having been the first of a three-game road trip for SU Field Hockey, they'll now look ahead to Saturday, September 10, when they'll travel to Albright College for an 11:00 AM start time and a chance to even their record at 2-2 with another win.
