Women's Soccer Unleashes Offensive Explosion for First Win of the Season

SELINSGROVE, PA (September 4, 2022) – The Susquehanna University Women's Soccer team returned to action on Sunday afternoon after their season opener against 7th-ranked Misericordia University on Thursday, September 1 ended in a 2-0 defeat. This time, hosting the Aggies of Delaware Valley University, the River Hawks unleashed a dominant display on home turf, taking an 8-1 victory for their first of the season and evening their record at 1-1.

The scoring came quickly and often for SU, with senior transfer Marley Sprenkel opening her account for the River Hawks in just the third minute of the match. She pounced on a loose rebound in the box to fire home and grab the lead. Just four minutes later, junior Mikela Florio scored on a brilliantly crossed ball from senior attacker and reigning All-Landmark First Team forward Emily Wertz, doubling the lead. The offense would continue to pepper the goal throughout the half, with Delaware Valley's goalkeeper producing some stellar saves to keep the scoreline close. Wertz would finally break through with a marker of her own, latching onto a ball played perfectly over the top of the defense by reigning Defensive Player of the Year Marley Clendenin and slotting it just beneath the crossbar.

The rest of the scoring would be all about new additions for the River Hawks this season. Jumping into the fray for the final goal of the first half was first-year player Kameron Watkins, who went on a mesmerizing run through seemingly the entire defense to place a finish in the bottom corner and notch her first collegiate goal. Sprenkel would then put her second goal away a few minutes later, with another composed finish, this time aided by a beautiful cross from junior Ellie Betheil. The goals kept coming, with Watkins proving herself to be a standout, adding a second goal only a minute after Sprenkel's second. Fellow first-year forwards Caitlyn Sanchez and Sydney Williams also opened their collegiate accounts, finishing assists from Morgan Stickley and Maya Ruhalter, respectively.

After a long match in very hot weather, Delaware Valley would show some strong resilience in getting on the board with a late score, meaning the match would end at 8-1.

With this confidence boosting win behind them, SU will now prepare for their next match, which will again take place on home turf at Sassafras Field. Dickinson College will visit on Wednesday, September 7, with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 PM.
