Men's Soccer Ties Lycoming In Battle of the Boot

WILLIAMSPORT, PA (September 7, 2022) -- Junior Owen Healey tallied in the 43rd minute to put the Susquehanna University men's soccer team in front in the 2022 Battle of the Boot at Lycoming College, but the host Warriors equalized in the 67th minute as the two teams played to a 1-1 draw in non-conference play from UPMC Field.

Lycoming (1-0-2) had the first scoring chance in the opening minute, but Gerrit Stech was there to make a save on a shot by the Warriors' Keller Chamovitz. Stech was called upon again in the 13th minute, stopping a Brayden Wise shot and the rebound was sent just wide by Wise. The momentum started to shift towards Susquehanna, as SU was awarded two corners while Kevin Ayoso had a shot on goal that was stopped by the Lycoming keeper.

The battle would stay mostly in the midfield through the remaining minutes of the first half until Susquehanna got on the board on a nice sequence of play. First-year Calvin Paulick played a great direct ball to senior Michael Morelli 25 yards from goal, and he flicked the pass into the path of Healey. The forward made a few Lycoming defenders miss and beat the keeper with a low shot to make it 1-0 for SU at 42:34 of the contest. Susquehanna held a 5-3 shots edge at the intermission, with both teams earning a pair of corner kicks.

In the second stanza, the hosts turned up the pressure as Lycoming outshot the River Hawks 9-4 in the second 45 minutes of action. The tying goal for the Warriors came in the 67th minute, as a through ball from the midfield sent Owen Magee in behind the SU defense. As the River Hawk defense sprinted to recover, McGee played a ball across to the top of the box where Kenny Clapp fired into the top of the night to deadlock the score at one.

In the waning moments of the game it looked as though Susquehanna had posted the game-winner with just over 2:30 minutes to play, but Nick Wilke made a great save on an Adrian Dilascio shot off a corner kick on the last good scoring chance for either team. Lycoming had one final attempt just before the final whistle, but the shot sailed harmlessly to the right as the teams settled for the draw.

The Warriors finished with a slight edge in shots, 12-9, while Susquehanna picked up eight corner kicks to the seven for the hosts. Stech finished with five saves in goal for the River Hawks, while his Lycoming counterpart also made five stops.
