#7 Chris. Newport Ends Win Streak for Field Hockey

SELINSGROVE, PA (October 10, 2023) – Susquehanna field hockey would see their three-game win streak come to an end on Tuesday, as an early afternoon bout with 7th-ranked Christopher Newport ended in a 4-0 loss for the River Hawks. The visiting Captains, who entered the day undefeated, looked every bit their ranking as they improved to 12-0 on the season.

Susquehanna would hold the Captains at bay for most of the first quarter, contending with five shots and seeing goalkeeper Ashley Derrick get in action early with three saves in the quarter. But at the 13-minute mark, CNU would break through with a goal following a penalty corner, before adding a second just 26 seconds later.

The second quarter saw Susquehanna begin to muster an attack of their own, tallying four of their seven total shots in the quarter and earning eight penalty corners. Despite the sustained pressure, they were unable to beat the CNU goalkeeper, who finished the day with four saves and a clean sheet.

With the score remaining 2-0 at halftime, the Captains got back on the offensive in the third quarter, scoring in the early minutes while bossing possession, not allowing Susquehanna a single shot in the period. Derrick continued to fight to stem the tide, making a number of excellent saves, ultimately finishing with eight on the day.

The fourth quarter saw Christopher Newport again score early in the quarter, but Susquehanna would fight back, forcing one final save from the CNU keeper to maintain the shutout.

CNU finished with 15 shots and 12 on goal, to seven shots and four on goal for SU. The River Hawks did finish with an advantage in the penalty corner battle, with 13 to CNU's six.

Despite the setback in non-conference play, things still look bright for the River Hawks, who remain undefeated in Landmark play and will get right back in action tomorrow as they'll visit Goucher for a 6 pm start and a chance to improve to 5-0 in the Landmark.
