Field Hockey Gets Seventh Shutout Win of the Season

TOWSON, MD (October 11, 2023) – Back on the field just a day after facing #7 Christopher Newport at home, Susquehanna field hockey visited Goucher on Wednesday evening for a Landmark matchup. The River Hawks made the most of the trip, putting up a dominant performance enroute to a 3-0 shutout win over the hosting Gophers, improving to 5-0 in Landmark play and registering their seventh shutout win of the season, including four of their five Landmark matches so far.

SU got on the board early, with Katie Bucher scoring her fourth goal of the season on a penalty corner play, getting the assist from Kari Schmidt, who leads the team with seven helpers on the year. While that would be the only goal SU would score in the quarter, that would only be due to the work of Goucher's goalie, who made four saves as Susquehanna racked up five shots and seven penalty corners in the first quarter alone. That theme would continue throughout the game, as the River Hawks fired shot after shot on goal, looking incredibly efficient and dangerous on the attack.

They doubled their lead just over a minute into the second quarter, as Rebecca Ripans scored on an assist from Emma Campitelli, the sixth goal of the season for the junior, who leads the team in the stat. The story continued on into the halftime break and remained that way in the second half, with Goucher's goalie having to save all seven of SU's shots in the third quarter to keep the score at 2-0.

The River Hawks got their third marker with just under ten minutes remaining in the game, as first-year Gracie Roush fired home the first goal of her collegiate career. As the final whistle blew, Susquehanna finished the night with 19 shots, 18 of which were on goal, highlighting that potency and efficiency. Goucher would have to make 15 saves all told. Susquehanna was also lockdown on defense, allowing the Gophers to register just one shot on the night, which was not on goal. SU also tallied 14 penalty corners without allowing a single one to Goucher.

Now 10-4 overall, the River Hawks will begin a three-game homestand as the final stretch of the regular season sees all four of Susquehanna's remaining matches coming against Landmark opponents. They'll begin on Saturday, October 14, as Moravian comes to Selinsgrove for a 1 pm start, with the River Hawks celebrating Senior Day and hoping to commemorate the occasion by improving to 6-0 in the Landmark, a result that could clinch a spot in the postseason for SU.
