SELINSGROVE, Pa. - Susquehanna men's soccer was dealt a 2-1 defeat by the Goucher Gophers on Tuesday night, falling behind in the early minutes and seeing a red card slash their chances of a comeback from two goals down.
The home side fell behind in the opening two minutes when Eian Waples jumped on a through ball and finished at the second attempt after his first shot was saved by
Tony Burns. Burns made five saves on the day in his fifth consecutive start for the River Hawks.
Goucher outshot the River Hawks 9-2 in the first half, and 16-7 on the night with a 7-5 edge in the second half. Only two of the Susquehanna shots found the target, with one finding the net.
Goucher went up two goals when Paul Van Engeland finished from the edge of the box on an assist from Rafael Berhanu, with the second goal coming in the 70th minute.
The River Hawks had a chance to get back into the game, when in the 80th minute,
John Destil was through on goal and fouled in the penalty area, seeing a penalty kick awarded that was dispatched by
Max Paczewski. Paczewski's finish was calm as he slotted into the bottom right hand corner, sending the Goucher goalkeeper Ale Sternini the wrong way.
Susquehanna saw their chances cut by a red card to
John Kuderka in the 83rd minute for a second yellow card after picking up a first booking in the 76th minute. Paczewski also saw a yellow card in the 86th minute.
The defeat for the River Hawks drops them to 3-7-2 as they return to the road for a three-game road trip during which they will face Moravian on Oct. 14, Juniata on Oct. 17, and Scranton on Oct. 21. They are next at home against Drew for their final home game, a senior day clash with Drew University at Sassafras Field.Â
