SELINSGROVE, PA – Susquehanna volleyball battled Catholic in a conference matchup on Saturday in O.W. Houts Gymnasium. The Cardinals would prove the winner in a 3-1 loss for the River Hawks, with set scores of 25-19, 25-21, 25-17, and 25-21. Susquehanna's record falls to 2-4 in conference play, and 6-14 overall. The team will stay in Selinsgrove to play Goucher College on Tuesday, a rescheduled matchup, before heading out to Michigan to compete in the Calvin Invite next weekend.
Catholic jumped out to an early lead against Susquehanna in the first set with an overwhelming lead of 20-10. The River Hawks would then put together a swift 5-1 run which saw
Sami Kline swat three kills to pull the score to a more respectable 21-15 in favor of the Cardinals. Ultimately, Susquehanna would be unable to complete a comeback, falling in the first set 25-19.
The second set featured a strong tug-of-war match between the opponents, with the score finding itself at 9-8 in favor of the home squad.
Amanda Gore and
Delaney McCoy then led a 9-3 run, with Gore converting three kills and McCoy snapping three service aces to allow Susquehanna to pull ahead to a 18-11 lead. A strong showing from Catholic allowed them to tighten the score to 20-19 in favor of SU, but it would not be enough as Susquehanna finished the set with a score of 25-21 and an overall 1-1 set score.
The third and fourth sets for the River Hawks would not bode quite as well, featuring some long rallies from both teams but ultimately ending with 25-17 and 25-21 victories as Catholic secured the win, their second in-conference and fifteenth overall.
Senior
Amanda Gore continued her hot streak with 13 kills and 3.5 total blocks on the day, including a solo block in the fourth set. Setters
Megan Currie and
Delaney McCoy tied for the team lead in assists with 17. McCoy would also lead a team which totaled 10 services aces with four total, followed by
Jessica Sack with two of her own.
Valerie Stoltz and
Keira Roach led the back line with 9 digs apiece. Susquehanna would combine for a .117 hitting percentage on 41 kills from 128 attempts. Catholic would finish the day with a slightly better .183 hitting percentage with 44 kills on 120 attempts.
