SCRANTON, PA - Susquehanna men's soccer played out a thrilling 3-3 tie with Scranton on Saturday afternoon, equalizing twice from a goal down to take a point from the game. They battled hard in a back-and-forth game, eventually escaping with a draw after a 90th minute goal from
John Kuderka.
Kuderka's goal was his second of the season, and there were goals for
Max Paczewski, a conference-best 10th, and for
Zach Polovitch, who also scored his second of the campaign.
The River Hawks fell behind early through Dylan Estevez, who steered past
Gerrit Stech in just the fourth minute after an assist from Ciaran Corr. Paczewski scored the equalizer in the 23rd minute, finishing into the top right corner from the penalty spot to square the game at a goal apiece after Polovitch was fouled inside the penalty area.
Susquehanna took the lead in the 74th minute, scoring their second through Polovitch after an excellent long ball over the top from
Zak Kreisher found his right foot as Polovitch looped a shot over the goalkeeper to give his side the 2-1 advantage.
The lead would end in the 86th minute, when Corr finished from the edge of the penalty area past Stech to make it 2-2. The Royals would take the lead in the 90th minute with 46 seconds left, as Tyler Colton tapped in at the back post from Matt Capretto's assist.
The thrilling, back-and-forth game culminated just 26 seconds from time, as Kuderka headed in a cross from
Owen Kaar to make it 3-3 with almost the last kick of the game.
The home side outshot the River Hawks 18-11 over the 90 minutes, including a 12-7 edge in the second half, however, the Royals only had three shots on target to the River Hawks' eight. The River Hawks had five corners to the Royals' six, while Susquehanna committed 20 fouls, including 12 in the second half, to Scranton's 10.
Polovitch led the way with three shots, all on target, including one goal, while
Ben Sweeney also added three shots, two of which were on target. Both of Paczewski's shots found the target, Kuderka added an additional shot as well as his goal, and
Tom O'Keefe contributed with a shot.
The tie means the River Hawks move to 3-9-3 ahead of a Senior Day clash with Drew next weekend on Oct. 28, with a 1 PM kickoff. While they have been eliminated from postseason contention, they will fight for position in the Landmark Conference when they take on the Rangers next Saturday.
