SUFH Makes First-Quarter Goal Stand in 1-0 Win at Alvernia

READING, PA – The Susquehanna University field hockey team paid a non-conference visit Tuesday to Alvernia, earning their second straight shutout win with a 1-0 victory over the Golden Wolves.

Rebecca Ripans' first quarter score proved to be just enough offense as the defense and a six-save day from Ashley Derrick boosted the River Hawks to 8-3 on the season and 4-1 on the road.

Ripans' goal came hallway through the first quarter, with assists given to Ashley Schreffler and Sophia Prata. Despite a 14-9 lead in shots and 10-7 in shots on goal attempts to add to their lead were thwarted by Lexi Boettcher's nine saves in goal for Alvernia. The same commitment was met by River Hawk goalie Ashley Derrick, who turned away all six shots she faced and her teammates keeping out the Golden Wolves on all seven penalty corner chances.

The lone score from Ripans was just one of her three shots on the day, while Prata had four shots. Taylor Rothermel, who was recently named River Hawk of the Week after a three-goal week last week versus seventh-ranked York (Pa.) and Lycoming, finished with two shots and Emma Campitelli accounting for the remaining shot.

The River Hawks, winners of six of their last seven, return to Landmark action on Saturday at home versus Elizabethtown at 1 p.m. Susquehanna is 3-0 on the year in conference play with seven matches to go. All but next Tuesday's home matchup with #9 Christopher Newport are Landmark contests. The CNU match will mark the team's third contest this fall against a NFHCA top-25 team.
