ELIZABETHTOWN, PA (October 7, 2023) – The Susquehanna University field hockey team visited Landmark Conference foe Elizabethtown on Saturday afternoon, looking to claim their third-straight victory. They would accomplish that goal with aplomb, registering their third-straight shutout win and improving to 4-0 in Landmark play as they defeated the Blue Jays 3-0.
The River Hawks got off to a quick start, forcing two penalty corners in the opening three minutes, with a shot on the second from Sarah McAndrews being saved to keep the game scoreless. Kari Schmidt would have a shot from a corner later in the quarter that would also force a save from the E-Town keeper. All told, despite ten shots and eight penalty corners from SU in the first half alone, the Blue Jays' goalie would make five saves and keep the game scoreless at the half.
But the pressure would finally pay off for SU in the early minutes of the second half, as Ashley Schreffler would insert a penalty corner before receiving a return pass from Schmidt that allowed her to fire home at the back post and give Susquehanna the lead. Just over a minute later, that lead would double as McAndrews would score on an assist by Rebecca Ripans.
Now down by two, the Blue Jays began to apply some pressure on offense, with three penalty corners and two shots in the final five minutes of the third quarter. But the SU defense held firm, while goalkeeper Ashley Derrick stepped up to make a save, one of just two that would be required for her shutout on the day.
Ripans put the game on ice with just over six minutes to go in the fourth quarter, scoring the River Hawks' third of the day as she netted her fifth goal of the season and capped a three-point day. SU continued to apply pressure until the final whistle, adding two more shots and two more penalty corners to bring their game totals to 15 shots and 12 penalty corners, compared just four in each stat for the Blue Jays.
Now 9-3 overall and 4-0 in Landmark play, the River Hawks will return home for their final non-conference matchup of the season, facing a stiff test in #7 Christopher Newport. That game will take place on Tuesday, October 10 at 1 pm.
