Women's Soccer Unable to Break Through in 1-0 Loss to Catholic

SELINSGROVE, PA (October 3, 2023) – Taking to Sassafras Field for their second-straight home Landmark game, Susquehanna women's soccer hosted Catholic on Tuesday evening in search of their first conference win of the season. Despite a closely fought match, the visiting Cardinals ultimately claimed a 1-0 win, scoring early in the first half on a direct free kick from just outside the SU box.

Catholic put the pressure on early, forcing Kayleigh Saboja to make two saves in the opening ten minutes. The free kick goal came in the 19th minute, with a foul called right outside the box setting up a chance from just about 20 yards. Peyton Coron would avoid going over the SU player wall, instead firing low and to the left, catching the inside of the goal post and finding the back of the net. Susquehanna would push for chances at an equalizer as the half wore on but were unable to put a shot on goal before halftime, while controlling much more of the ball.

The second half saw opportunities open for Catholic, as the River Hawks began to push more aggressively for an equalizing goal, allowing for counterattacking chances for the Cardinals. Saboja continued to provide key saves, making two more in the second half for a total of four on the night. SU would force a save in the 58th minute, but beyond that struggled to get chances on goal, with Catholic playing disciplined defense. In the end, the one goal would be decisive, as time ran out with the score still unchanged from the 19th minute.

Susquehanna will get another chance at home this week to pick up their first Landmark win of the season, hosting Elizabethtown on Saturday, October 7 for a 3:30 pm start.
