SELINSGROVE, PA (October 7, 2023) – In search of a positive result after a midweek defeat against Catholic, the Susquehanna women's soccer team found their groove on Saturday afternoon, hosting Elizabethtown College and picking up their first Landmark win of the season with a 2-0 victory over the Blue Jays. The win also marked a milestone for head coach Nick Hoover '06, as he picked up the 100th victory of his tenure at the helm of the River Hawks.
Having struggled to find offense in recent games, a re-tooling of the formation paid major dividends for the SU squad, as they created numerous chances and peppered the E-Town goal with shots all afternoon. However, despite a whopping 12 shots in the first half, the River Hawks would not find the back of the net until the second half. The Blue Jays' goalkeeper would keep the game scoreless through the first frame, making five saves in the period.
Susquehanna's breakthrough came in the 63rd minute, as leading goalscorer Emily Wertz got on the end of a well-placed through ball from Delaney Morton and fired past the keeper, netting her sixth goal of the campaign. She would then take on the assisting role just over ten minutes later, as the River Hawks doubled their advantage through a goal from sophomore Morgan Stickley, who Wertz slotted through brilliantly and made no mistake in the one-on-one with the keeper, powering a shot past her left side.
Meanwhile, the SU defense was stalwart throughout the game, holding the Blue Jays without a shot in the first half and allowing only two in the second. Goalkeeper Kayleigh Saboja would need just one save to secure the win, catching a shot from distance with ease as Elizabethtown struggled to make chances closer to the Susquehanna box.
The River Hawks will hit the road for their next two contests, coming up on the halfway mark in Landmark Conference play. They'll first visit Goucher on Tuesday, October 10 for a 7 pm start, before heading to Moravian on Saturday, October 14 for a 3:30 pm kickoff.
