BALTIMORE, MD – In their Landmark Conference opener on the road Wednesday night,
Emezie Egeonu had a scoring clinic against Goucher, leading the River Hawks to a 74-51 win.
Egeonu was 12-17 from the field, 1-1 from behind the arc, 2-4 from the line, ending with 27 points for the night in only 28 minutes. Egeonu used his weight to his advantage to out muscle the Gopher defenders and score 22 out of the River Hawks' 48 points in the paint. The second highest scorer for the River Hawks would be
Billy Anderson coming off the bench with 18 points in 25 minutes, shooting 9-14 from the field.
Audric Washington would be the unsung hero of the game, leading the team in rebounds with 15, including four offensive rebounds and 11 defensive, one block, and would finish second in assists with four. Anderson would be the other glass cleaner for the River Hawks combing for 25 out of the River Hawks' 46 rebounds. Anderson had 10 rebounds, four offensive, and six defensive.
Facing a full court press the River Hawks would fall behind 5-0 early in the first half, but quickly answered with a 6-0 run of their own. After both teams went on a short scoring run the game would stay close with the River Hawks taking the lead around halfway through the first half going ahead after two Egeonu buckets, bringing the score to 22-18. The Gophers would go on to tie the game at 26 five minutes late but after another Egeonu bucket, the River Hawks would take the lead again and not look back for the rest of the game. They would go into half time with a 34-31 lead over the Gophers.
Just five minutes into the second half they would quickly extend this lead to 46-36, and then would keep the lead similar halfway through the second half with a score of 62-50. In these last 10 minutes of the game the River Hawks would go on to extend their lead by another 11 points to make the final score 74-51.
Throughout the game the River Hawks outrebounded the Gophers 46-28, while also outshooting the Gophers from behind the arc and from the field. With this win the River Hawks record is now 3-2 on the year, moving head coach
