Susquehanna Defeats Colby College to Sweep the Babson Winter Tournament

BABSON PARK, MA (December 30, 2023) - The Susquehanna women's basketball team defeated the Colby College Mules 69-59 Saturday afternoon to finish the Babson Winter Tournament with a record of 2-0.

Much like yesterday's game against Babson College, the River Hawk offense started off hot from the field, shooting 9-12 as a team and going a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line. The steady offensive attack was enough to give the River Hawks a 24-18 lead after one, despite three made three pointers by the Mules.

In the second quarter both teams had their highs and lows. Early on Susquehanna increased their lead to 12 points, the largest of the game, while Colby was in a 1-8 shooting slump, but the Mules went on a 7-0 run down the stretch to bring the deficit down to just two points. The teams went back and forth for a bit until the River Hawks took a 39-34 lead into halftime.

The third quarter saw Julia Roth take over. The River Hawk forward scored 10 points in the quarter while shooting 4-4 from the field. This, combined with a strong defensive effort that held the Mules to 4-15 shooting gave the River Hawks a 55-47 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The fourth was more of the same, this time with Kenzie Selvaggi stepping up scoring eight points, which included a made field goal, three-pointer, and three free throws in the final minute, while the Susquehanna defense held Colby in check to secure a 69-59 win.

Roth led the way for the River Hawks with a double-double of 22 points and 13 rebounds to go along with four assists and three steals. Selvaggi and Julia Pinckert also chimed in with Selvaggi scoring 13 points and Pinkert scoring 15 points. Once again Susquehanna dominated the points in the paint with 36 for the River Hawks to just 18 for the Colby and continued to benefit from forced turnovers with 19 points off 14 turnovers by the Mules.

Susquehanna improves to 7-4 on the season and has won three in a row going back to Selinsgrove for their next game against the Drew University Rangers. That game is on Wednesday Jan. 3, and will tip off at 7 p.m.
