Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Matt Scialabba

Women's Basketball Outlasted by #25 Elizabethtown

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA (December 9, 2023) – The Susquehanna women's basketball team traveled to Elizabethtown on Saturday afternoon to face their second-straight Landmark opponent who appeared in last season's playoffs. The #25 ranked Blue Jays ultimately defended their home turf, but the visiting River Hawks produced a valiant effort, with the game ending 75-59 and SU producing a 41.8 percent shooting night along with going 44.4 percent from beyond the arc.

Susquehanna would hang close for much of the first quarter and a half, trailing by just a point with 6:21 remaining in the second quarter. However, a seven-point run from Elizabethtown would help to ignite their offense, combined with foul troubles from the River Hawks. Ultimately, E-Town outscored SU 20-6 in the final minutes of the second quarter, taking a comfortable 40-25 lead into the half.

Susquehanna's defense would continue to be plagued by foul calls in the second half, particularly in the paint. They would ultimately surrender 23 free throw attempts to the hosts, with the Blue Jays making 19 of those. They would also turn the ball over 17 times, compared to 11 for E-Town.

Despite scoring 22 points in the third quarter and 34 total in the second half, SU was never able to cut the Blue Jays' lead down to any less than 11. The hosts were paced by an impressive 26-point display from Cyleigh Wilson, who went four for six from beyond the arc. Julia Roth continued her stretch of impressive play for the River Hawks with a 19-point outing, also leading the team with nine rebounds and coming up just shy of another double-double. She's now scored in double digits in six of SU's eight games this season and leads the team in both scoring and rebounding with 13.6 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. Kenzie Selvaggi also had a good night, scoring 13 points on five for nine shooting, including going three for four from deep.

Now 4-4 overall and 2-2 in Landmark play, the River Hawks will face non-conference opponents in their next three contests. They'll first visit Lebanon Valley College on Tuesday, December 19 for a 6 pm start. Then, they'll travel north just prior to the new year, heading to Massachusetts to take part in the Babson Winter Tournament. They'll play hosting Babson College on Friday, December 29 at 1 pm before taking on Colby-Sawyer College the next day at noon.
