Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Fourth Quarter Struggles See SU Fall to Scranton at Home

SELINSGROVE, PA (February 1, 2023) – The Susquehanna women's basketball team took on #4 University of Scranton on Wednesday night, facing the Royals for the second time this season after falling to the Royals just a few weeks ago at the Palestra. Tonight's game was a low-scoring, defensive scrap, but again it would be Scranton who came out on top, remaining undefeated this season with a 56-36 win over SU.

The River Hawks made a clear point of slowing down the offensive firepower of the Royals from the opening tip, hanging close in the first quarter while holding Scranton to just 12 points. The teams traded buckets early before two free throws and a made layup in final minute gave Scranton a 12-9 lead at the end of the quarter. They would stretch that advantage out to as many as 11 points in the second quarter, finding the bucket with a bit more regularity as they tallied 16 points in the frame while the River Hawks again scored nine, six of those points coming from successful and-one plays by Kaitlyn Lynch and Isabella Schwabe. Two free throws in the final seconds of the first half restored Scranton to a double-digit advantage, leading 28-18. Having come into the game averaging more than 72 points per game as a team, Scranton was clearly behind their typical pace, it was simply a matter of turning good defense into offense for Susquehanna.

And they would do just that in the third quarter, managing their best quarter yet as they scored 15 points while holding Scranton to just six. A six-point run followed by a five-point run for the River Hawks helped them gouge the gap to just one point by the time the third quarter ended. With the score 34-33 in Scranton's favor, they would turn around to respond with their own quarter of dominance, clamping down on defense to force SU into numerous turnovers, also managing their best offensive quarter with a 6 of 14 performance from the floor and going 9 of 13 from the foul line. That translated to a 22-3 score in the fourth quarter, putting Scranton firmly back in control as the game ended.

SU was led by another double-digit scoring performance by senior Kaitlyn Lynch, who tallied 15 points and added three rebounds and an assist. Olivia Brandt controlled the glass, grabbing 11 rebounds while scoring eight points and adding two assists and a steal.

Susquehanna now sits at 7-13 overall and 2-7 in the Landmark Conference, with the final stretch of conference play just on the horizon. The River Hawks will remain at home for their next contest, taking on Drew on Saturday, February 4, tipping off at 2 pm and also celebrating Alumni Day.
