SELINSGROVE, PA (February 18, 2023) -- The Susquehanna University women's lacrosse team outscored visiting Marymount University (VA) 6-1 in the fourth quarter, blowing open a tie game after three quarters to capture a 13-8 win in the 2023 season opener for the River Hawks.
The River Hawks (1-0) and Saints (0-1) were deadlocked at seven goals apiece after 45 minutes, but first-year
Abby Andrus scored unassisted early in the fourth quarter to make it 8-7 in favor of the home team. A man-up goal by
Kelsey Homberg put the River Hawks up by two, but a Taylor Chepren unassisted goal brought Marymount to within one with six minutes left. SU would take control from that point, as Andrus scored to regain the two-goal lead for the River Hawks and
Allie Kutler,
Nikki Genovese and
Liv Owen provided some insurance down the stretch to clinch the win.
Susquehanna trailed early in the first, but three straight tallies by Owen followed by Kutler's first of the season to make it 4-1. Marymount would tally the game's next five goals to take a 6-4 lead before two goals from Homberg right before halftime sent the game to the break deadlocked at six. Homberg scored to put the River Hawks up early in the third, and Marymount's Kaleigh Dunham tied the game with a score to set up the big fourth for SU.
First-year
Abby Andrus had a monster debut for the River Hawks, leading SU with six points on two goals and four assists. Homberg finished with four goals, an assist, five ground balls and a draw control, while Owen tallied four goals on five shots. Kutler totaled three points on two goals and an assist, leading the squad with eight draw controls.
Senior goalkeeper
Emmy Regan posted a strong game with 13 stops, adding five ground balls and a caused turnover. Junior
Madi Mitchell was her usual dominant self in the midfield with two ground balls and three caused turnovers, while classmate
Liz Hordesky finished with four caused turnovers.
Chloe Pappalardo also tallied two caused turnovers for SU, and
Caitlin Harvey finished with three draw controls.
Dunham finished with five points on three goals and two assists in the loss for Marymount.
SU will head on the road on Wednesday, February 22 to take on Stockton University in non-conference action in Galloway, NJ.
