Men's Lax Falls in Double Overtime Thriller Against Misericordia

SELINSGROVE, PA (March 1, 2023) – The Susquehanna men's lacrosse team hosted Misericordia University on Wednesday evening, seeing the back-and-forth contest go to overtime, where SU would eventually fall in the second overtime period, going down 13-12.

The River Hawks started fast, scoring a goal within the opening minute through Chris Ciccarello, but the Cougars would eventually answer back at the 10:59 mark after a Susquehanna turnover, something that would become a recurring theme throughout the game. The teams traded goals twice more, with each taking a one-goal lead during the period but ultimately ending tied 3-3.

SU seized momentum to start the second period, being the first team to push a lead beyond one as they scored two in a row, the first being a memorable coast-to-coast run by goalie Jozef Korpics, forcing a turnover in his own end before rushing all the way downfield to bury a shot. Scoring would go quiet for both teams for nearly six minutes of game time, but yet again Misericordia answered back, scoring three straight goals to reclaim the lead. Brennan Lorence notched a tally in the final seconds before halftime to send the teams into the break tied 6-6.

The Cougars began the second half hot, scoring three straight goals of their own to lead 9-6 at the 9:00 mark in the third. Lorence finally answered back with 4:47 on the clock, but each time found the net one more time before the end of the period to see the score at 10-8 in favor of Misericordia.

The fourth would see SU answer each Misericordia tally with two of their own, as the Cougars scored first but SU netted twice in less than a minute through Steven Musser and a second goal from Ciccarello. MU then scored their 12th goal, but again Susquehanna had two in response, with Lorence scoring his third and the other again coming less than a minute later, this courtesy of Kieran Thomas. The teams then traded shots in the final five minutes but neither could reclaim the lead before the end of regulation.

After the first overtime period again saw each offense unable to beat the goalies, the second overtime provided a decisive goal. SU won the opening faceoff and Lorence got a shot on the ensuing possession, but MU's goalie provided another save and the Cougars drove right back down the field and found the goal on their first shot of the second overtime, ending the game.

Lorence's three goals led the River Hawks, while Ciccarello and Thomas both tallied twice. Lorence also picked up an assist for four points on the night, while Jack Gaillard would tally two assists to lead the team in that category. Senior Ryan Prum was an absolute force in the faceoff circle, going 25 for 30 and racking up 15 groundballs. Korpics ended the game with 9 saves.

Now 3-2 overall, the River Hawks will get to stay at home for their next contest, hosting Neumann University on Saturday, March 4 at 1 pm.
