SELINSGROVE, PA (March 31, 2023) – The Susquehanna men's lacrosse team was dealt their first Landmark loss of the season on Friday afternoon as they fell at home against Catholic University. Despite a strong effort from leading goal scorer Brennan Lorence and a tightly contested first half, Catholic would pull away with a 5-0 advantage in the 3rd period, winning by a final score of 16-9.
The game began as a back-and-forth affair, with Catholic opening with two rapid-fire goals in the opening couple of minutes, but SU would answer back through Lorence, who would score first on a man-down breakaway, before following it a couple of minutes later with a goal on a man-up opportunity. Each team tallied once more in the first period, with Catholic going first, before Lorence scored her third of the day to tie it up for a second time.
The second period was a quieter affair, with the teams trading numerous empty possessions before SU claimed their first and only lead of the game at the 11:04 mark, with a goal coming from Kieran Thomas on an assist by Chris Ciccarello. However, Catholic responded with three straight goals in the remaining minutes to take a 6-4 lead into halftime.
The previously mentioned five-goal third quarter for Catholic proved to be the nail in the coffin for Susquehanna, as the momentum shift continued into the fourth, with only an interruption to start the 4th period from a Lorence goal on a man-up opportunity stopping what would've been ten-straight Catholic goals, rather than two five-goal streaks. A late fight back from the River Hawks proved they were not willing to suffer a double-digit defeat, as they managed an impressive four goals in the final 1:06 of the game to produce the final 16-9 scoreline.
Lorence finished with a four-goal performance, also adding an assist for five points. Points-leader Chris Ciccarello had a goal and four assists to match that team-high of five points. Senior goalkeeper Jozef Korpics also produced a strong performance despite the avalanche of shots faced, saving 15 of them on the day.
The River Hawks now sit at 7-5 overall and 1-1 in the Landmark Conference, with only further conference play remaining on the schedule. They'll hit the road for their next two games, first visiting Elizabethtown College on Saturday, April 8 for a 1 pm start, then traveling to Juniata College on the following Wednesday, April 12th for a 4 pm start.
