Lorence's Eight-Point Day Leads Men's Lax to Win

SELINSGROVE, PA (April 15, 2023) – After getting a key conference win midweek, SU men's lacrosse continued their positive momentum with another Landmark win on Saturday, this one coming at home over Moravian University. A well-fought game by both sides, the River Hawks managed to keep a grip on the lead throughout and finish with a 16-11 victory.

A cagey start had the game looking to have the potential to be a low-scoring affair. Moravian got the scoring started after the opening five minutes were scoreless, claiming what would ultimately be their only lead of the day. That lead lasted for more than five minutes, holding the River Hawks off the board until the 4:13 mark in the first quarter, when Kieran Thomas broke through to take the lid off. This started a stretch of three-straight goals for SU to close out the period, seeing tallies from Jack Gaillard and Jake Turner make the score 3-1.

The second quarter saw Moravian get right back into it with two goals in the first two minutes, tying it back up. Brennan Lorence scored only seven seconds after that tying goal to reclaim the lead, the first of a monster six-goal performance from the sophomore. The Greyhounds tied it up for a second time in short order, making the score 4-4. After six minutes of trading empty possessions, the River Hawks ignited an impressive scoring run to break the tie, scoring four straight goals in the final 6:19 of the second quarter to carry an 8-4 lead into halftime.

The streak expanded to five out of the break, as Thomas scored the first marker of the second half, getting a helper from Lawrence's second assist of the day. The rest of the quarter was defined by three-goal streaks, first for Moravian as they fought to get back into the game, but having narrowed the score to 9-7, SU got back on the offensive with a run of their own, getting a third goal from Thomas, a third goal from Lorence, and a second goal from Gaillard.

Again leading by five, the River Hawks gave up a small surge to the visitors, but clamped down anytime the Greyhounds got within three goals in the fourth period. Lorence was the sparkplug for breaking scoring streaks by Moravian, doubling his goal tally with three goals in the fourth quarter alone, including two within 15 seconds in the final two minutes of the game to restore the five-goal lead for Susquehanna and put the game on ice. His game-high eight points also matches his career-high mark, now having three eight-point performances in his career. The sophomore has now surpassed his season points total of 58 from his Landmark Rookie of the Year campaign in 2022, sitting at 68 total points this season with a conference-leading 58 goals, a mark that also ranks fourth in all of Division III. Senior goalie Jozef Korpics also had an outstanding game, making 17 saves to earn a .607 save percentage on the game and seal the win.

Now 9-6 overall and 3-2 in the Landmark Conference, SU sits firmly in fourth place, the final playoff spot, with just two games left to play in the regular season. They'll take to the road next weekend to face Goucher, the team directly below them in the standings, where a win would seal a playoff appearance for the River Hawks. They'll then finish the season at home, hosting Scranton on April 29 at 1 pm as they celebrate Senior Day.
