ALTOONA, PA (April 8, 2023) – The Susquehanna men's tennis team got back to winning ways on Saturday afternoon after a home loss to Moravian in their last match, this time hitting the road to face Penn State Altoona and coming away with an 8-1 victory.
The River Hawks looked in control from the start, beginning the day with a 3-0 sweep of doubles play. Joshua Sanderson and Kyle Wagner took an 8-1 win at #1 doubles, while Kyle Bitting and Conor Ryan pulled off an 8-0 sweep at #3 doubles. Thomas Hallahan and Gavin Ream would play a closer match at #2 doubles, but came away with an 8-5 win.
Singles play saw a number of great matchups, including three of the six going to third set tiebreakers. One of those proved to be Penn State Altoona's sole point of the day, as Sanderson was beaten 2-6, 6-3, 10-12 in the #1 singles slot. John Duncan took a commanding win in the #2 singles match, winning 6-0, 6-1. Hallahan would come out on the winning end of a third set, claiming #3 singles with a score of 1-6, 6-3, 10-6. Wagner also won in three, winning #4 singles with a score of 6-3, 2-6, 10-7. #5 singles saw Conor Ryan get a more straightforward victory, taking it 6-2, 6-2. The results were rounded out by a win for Ream in the #6 spot, the score finishing 6-3, 6-3.
The win kicks off a four-match road stretch to the end of the regular season for SU, as they'll have two more Landmark Conference matchups before finishing against King's College in non-conference play. They'll travel to Maryland in a week's time to face Goucher College at 1 pm. The Gophers are one of two squads currently undefeated in Landmark play.
