WINCHESTER, VA - Susquehanna University men's soccer endured many obstacles this weekend at the Shenandoah Tournament related to the weather. With their opening Friday night game with the host Hornets preempted 35 minutes in due to continued lightning delays, the River Hawks had to wait until Saturday evening to retake the field for their final game with Southern Virginia. Again, the weather and preceding games impacted the start time, with Head Coach
Jim Findlay's team taking the field around 9 P.M. At night's end, it was the Knights who won the match, 3-0.
The opening score game in the sixth minute from Zach Bartholomew, assisted by Calum Yule. Susquehanna hunkered down to keep the deficit at one for the remainder of the first half. Despite an 11-3 first-half lead in shots, Susquehanna had yet to find an answer before heading into intermission. When the second half got underway, Southern Virginia found its next goal in the 60th minute. Gavin Young fielded a cross from the right, dribbling a ball through the back line, setting up a scoring play for Dallin Miller to tuck the ball into the lower right corner for a 2-nil lead. Some 20 minutes later, Young got a goal of his own in tremendous fashion, connecting on a header off a cross from the left side by Trey Ricker.
Susquehanna goalie
Gerrit Stech totaled two saves on the night in his full 90 minutes between the posts. The River Hawks held a 16-8 lead in shots, though the Knights carried a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. Susquehanna also held a 6-4 lead in corner kicks.Â
SU Men's Soccer travels Wednesday to York (Pa.) for a 7 P.M. non-conference matchup.Â
