Women's Soccer Sees First Half Lead Slip Away in Weekend Finale

WINCHESTER, VA (September 10, 2023) – The Susquehanna women's soccer team concluded their weekend in Virginia with a Sunday afternoon matchup against Bridgewater College, hosted by Shenandoah University. After a close loss against the hosts the night before, SU saw a first-half lead slip away against Bridgewater and ultimately fell 3-1.

It was a battle of quantity vs. quality in terms of offense between the two squads. Bridgewater provided plenty of shots, finishing with 14 total, but only four on goal. Meanwhile, the River Hawks were much more efficient, with seven of their eight shots being on goal. Emily Wertz led the way with three of her four shots forcing saves. But Bridgewater would get an inspired performance from their goalkeeper, who made all seven necessary saves. In fact, it would be Bridgewater who were ultimately responsible for all four goals in the game, as the opening marker in the 30th minute would be an own goal that gave SU the 1-0 lead.

But, after struggling with accuracy in the first half, having eight shots but none on goal, Bridgewater homed in on the goal in the second half, scoring an equalizer just over five minutes into the second half and then claiming the lead in the 78th minute, relying on their goalkeeper to keep them in the game defensively while looking dangerous on the attack. The dagger came less than five minutes later, as Bridgewater put the game on ice with a third goal, counterattacking after a save on a Wertz shot at the other end.

After a tough start to the season that has seen the River Hawks begin with three-straight road losses, they'll return to friendly confines for their home opener on Wednesday afternoon, hosting DeSales at 4 pm at Sassafras Field.
