Wertz Makes History as Women's Soccer Battles to 1-1 Draw with Ursinus

SELINSGROVE, PA (September 20, 2023) – Returning to home turf after a tough road loss, the Susquehanna women's soccer team faced another tough non-conference bout on Wednesday evening, facing off with Ursinus College. After each team net a goal in the first half, both would try but neither could find a winner, ultimately seeing time run out with the 1-1 draw intact.

SU attacked well in the first half, tallying five shots and forcing three saves from the Ursinus goalkeeper. The one that would hit the back of the net came off the head of Gillian Maack, who opened her scoring account on the season with a picture-perfect finish from an early corner kick. Supplying the corner was Emily Wertz, who etched her name into the Susquehanna history books with the 19th assist of her career, the most of any player in team history. It could not have come on a more appropriate play, as the highlight-worthy corner kick displayed the Wertz-Maack connection that has been so reliable in the River Hawks' attack throughout the classmates' career at SU.

Kayleigh Saboja would make three saves in SU's goal on the night, but ultimately fell victim to a well-placed shot on a penalty kick in the 27th minute of the match. Won after an attacker went to ground in the midst of a scrum while SU attempted to clear an Ursinus corner, Grace Senese would power a shot into the upper left of the goal to beat Saboja's outstretched arms, as she guessed the right direction but couldn't quite get a hand to the shot.

The River Hawks will now turn their attention to their Landmark Conference opener, which will see them take to the road once more as they'll visit new members Wilkes University on Saturday, September 23 for a 4 pm start. After a strong 2022 campaign saw SU claim the second seed in the conference, they'll have aspirations of once again reaching the postseason and aiming for a second Landmark title in program history.
