EDWARDSVILLE, PA (September 23, 2023) – The women's soccer team visited Wilkes University on Saturday afternoon to open their Landmark Conference campaign in 2023. While both offenses would create multiple opportunities, ultimately the defenses would win out on the day, as nothing could separate the two teams and the game finished in a 0-0 draw.
There were plenty of shots to go around, with the two squads combining for 13 shots in the first half alone. However, creating shots on goal would be another matter, as each goalkeeper made two saves in the first half. Saboja finished the day with four saves in goal for the River Hawks, while Wilkes had five total.
The shot battle ultimately went the way of the River Hawks, with 13 total but only five on goal, while Wilkes finished with ten shots and four on goal. Corner kicks would be four to two in favor of Wilkes. The SU forwards led the way in supplying shots, with Mikela Florio having four and two on goal, while Emily Wertz had three, also with two on goal.
Both teams would fight to the last second, with each goalkeeper needing to make a save in the final minute of the game, but ultimately the spoils would be shared.
Now 1-4-2 overall, the River Hawks will begin a four-game homestand, with three of those contests coming against Landmark opponents. But they'll start with a non-conference matchup on Wednesday, September 27 against York College of PA, kicking off at 7 pm.
