SELINSGROVE, PA (September 20, 2023) – Taking to the field on the back of two-straight victories, Susquehanna field hockey continued their positive momentum with a third win in a row, hosting Albright on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference battle, claiming a 3-1 win over the Lions with a consistent attack throughout.
Despite the final score and a dominant advantage in many of the statistical categories, Albright would find the back of the cage first, scoring just over six minutes into the game on a penalty corner, their first shot of the game. But SU would respond just over a minute later, as points leader Kari Schmidt hit a rocket from the top of the circle that beat the Albright goalkeeper, tying the game once more.
The second quarter would be all River Hawks, with a dominant nine shots in the quarter and seven corners, forcing a whopping eight saves by Albright in the quarter. Despite that constant pressure, the River Hawks were unable to score again before halftime.
But the tie would finally be broken midway through the third quarter, as Rebecca Ripans would get on the end of a deflection by Schmidt and steer it home, the River Hawks' only shot of the quarter proving to be the game winner.
Insurance for SU came early in the fourth quarter, with Alli Kiley scoring her first goal of the season on an assist by Ashley Schreffler, sealing the result as Albright was unable to mount any offensive chances to follow.
The River Hawks finished the day with an impressive 18 shots, 13 of which were on goal. They also tallied a season-high 16 corners.
Now 5-2 on the season and having already gotten their first Landmark win under their belts last weekend, next on SUFH's agenda will be their Landmark home opener on Saturday, September 23. They'll host Wilkes University at 1 pm, looking to make it four wins in a row and a 2-0 start in the Landmark Conference.
