SELINSGROVE, PA (September 23, 2023) – Taking to Sassafras Field on a rainy Saturday afternoon, Susquehanna field hockey continued their impressive stretch of play, taking their fourth-straight win and improving to 2-0 in Landmark Conference play as they topped Wilkes 2-0.
It would look to be an even contest in the first quarter, with each team tallying two shots and Ashley Derrick being forced to make two saves in the SU goal. Wilkes also had the only penalty corner of the half in the period. However, it would be the River Hawks who broke through midway through the quarter, as Lexi Fumanti did well to tip in a blast from Katie Bucher, with Fumanti notching her fourth goal of the season.
The early lead would ignite SU as the game continued on, with the River Hawks' defense in particularly turning in a strong display. They held Wilkes without a shot for the remainder of the game, while SU's offense continued to apply pressure. An insurance goal came for the River Hawks halfway through the third quarter, as a well-executed breakaway allowed for an incisive pass and assist from Gracie Roush, setting up Sophia Prata with a great finish and her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
In all, Susquehanna had eight shots on the day, with seven on goal. They would also have three penalty corners in the second half after none in the first.
Now 6-2 overall, SU will remain at home for a big mid-week test, as they'll host 7th-ranked York College of PA on Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 pm. The undefeated Spartans present an exciting opponent, and the River Hawks have played them well in recent times, also knocking them off as a ranked opponent last season in a 2-1 win at York.
