SELINSGROVE, PA (September 27, 2023) – Susquehanna field hockey faced off against 8th-ranked York College (PA) on Wednesday afternoon in the River Hawks third-straight game at home. Riding a four-game win streak, SU faltered as the visiting Spartans put an end to that streak, handing the River Hawks a 4-1 defeat.
The Spartans had SU on the defensive from the opening moments, pressing well and maintaining possession for much of the match, particularly in the first half. The River Hawks were ultimately held without a shot in the first half, while the Spartans tallied 11. Despite the pressure, SU goalie Ashley Derrick would hold up well, keeping York off the board for the entire first quarter before the Spartans finally beat her just over five minutes into the second quarter. That first tally seemed to spark York's attack even further, as they scored a second just over a minute later, with both goals coming from their leading scorer, Katie Martino. The score remained 2-0 at halftime, with Derrick and the defense doing their best to stymie the Spartan onslaught.
SU held York off the board in the third quarter, despite the Spartans racking up eight shots and eight penalty corners in the frame. Meanwhile, the River Hawks began to threaten on offense, getting their first shot of the day and forcing a save. However, York would double their advantage with two more goals in the fourth quarter, netting the fourth with less than four minutes remaining in the game to close the door. The River Hawks did ultimately manage to find the net and break the shutout effort, with Taylor Rothermel finding the back of the cage on a well-executed breakaway between her and Katie Bucher, who supplied the assist.
Now 6-3 overall, the River Hawks remain in a strong position as the second half of the season approaches, with a 2-0 record in Landmark Conference play. They'll get a chance to make it three wins from three on Saturday, September 30, as they hit the road for the start of a three-game road stretch, visiting Lycoming College for a 1 pm start.
