SELINSGROVE, PA (September 27, 2023) – Back home after a weekend road trip to Wilkes, Susquehanna women's soccer hosted York College (PA) in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday night. A well-organized Spartan squad piled on the pressure throughout, ultimately beating the River Hawks 2-0.
The first half was a story of persistent attack from York, with the Spartans tallying ten shots in the half, forcing two saves from SU keeper Kayleigh Saboja, and netting the night's opening goal in the 26th minute, with a corner kick bouncing around in the box and eventually allowing for a close-range shot. Meanwhile, the River Hawks struggled to string together periods of possession and were unable to produce a shot in the first half.
The second half saw SU fighting with greater vigor, getting more offensive opportunities and managing to tally four shots. However, they were not quite able to unlock the Spartan's defensive shape and turn offensive chances into any shots on goal. At the other end, York continued to pepper Saboja's net, with the junior adding another five saves to the stat sheet for a career-high total of seven on the night. The Spartans did get the better of Saboja once more in the 71st minute, with a brilliantly placed looping shot from the edge of box going just over her hands and nestling in the lower-left corner of the goal.
SU will get to remain at home for their next attempt to get back in the win column, with their next three contests all coming at home, and all against Landmark Conference opponents. Having started their conference play with a scoreless draw on the road at Wilkes, the River Hawks will next face Lycoming on Saturday, September 30, beginning at 3:30 pm.
