SELINSGROVE, PA (September 30, 2023) – The Susquehanna women's soccer team hosted Lycoming College on Saturday afternoon for their Landmark home opener. Both teams began Landmark play with a draw, and the two squads replicated that result again with a 1-1 scoreline, after a late equalizer for Lycoming from the penalty spot matched an earlier goal by Emily Wertz.
The defenses would be the headline in the first half, with both teams struggling to get the ball in the attacking end and shots being at a premium. The River Hawks would have three, while the Warriors had just one in the half, though they would draw a save from Kayleigh Saboja in the SU goal.
The second half saw things open up for both groups, with a back-and-forth in the early minutes eventually leading to the goal for the River Hawks. A brilliant counterattack would see senior Juliana DeGeorge slot a perfect pass through the Lycoming defense to give Wertz a one-on-one with the goalkeeper. The River Hawks' leading scorer made no mistake, slotting home in the bottom-right corner to give SU the lead.
With time running out and the River Hawks looking to close out the result, a controversial handball call in the 80th minute would see Lycoming awarded with a penalty kick. The Warriors' leading scorer, Mikayla Long, would get on the scoresheet as well as she scored the penalty and sealed the draw, with neither team able to score in the final ten minutes.
Landmark play will continue for the River Hawks on Tuesday, October 3, as they'll remain at home to host Catholic University at 7 pm.
