Women Roll in Second Half to Win over Wilkes

SELINSGROVE, PA – Make it six out of seven for the Susquehanna University women's basketball team, delivering a 65-49 home Landmark Conference win Friday night against Wilkes. The River Hawks improve to 10-5 overall and 5-3 in conference play with ten more regular-season games to go.

Both sides remained relatively even in the first half, with Susquehanna holding a modest, yet firm 33-27 lead at halftime. That all changed when the River Hawks dropped 21 third-quarter points to Wilkes' 11 to take a 54-38 lead going into the fourth and never looked back. This was due in part to SU's defense. Challenged by the Colonels' 6'3" center Erin Shober, who had seven blocks on the night, the River Hawks matched that on the other end with stifling defense that held the Colonels to just 8-of-30 shooting in the second half, including 4-of-11 in the third and 3-of-19 in the fourth. SU, meanwhile, made 9-of-16 in the third quarter alone as they finished 23-of-56 on the night at 41.1 percent to Wilkes' 18-of-57 at 31.6 percent.

Susquehanna made 5-of-20 threes and 14-of-19 on free throws, compared to Wilkes' respective 3-of-14 and 10-of-15, but the biggest discrepancy perhaps was the River Hawks' 47-33 lead in rebounds, including 14 offensive that led to nine second-chance points. The orange and maroon also held a 30-24 lead in points in the paint and 13-5 in fast break points.

Julia Roth netted another double-double as the game's leading scorer with 16 points and ten rebounds, making 6-of-10 from the floor and 4-of-4 on free throws with four steals. Julia Pinckert was next on the team scoring list with 11 points, making 4-of-5 with one 3-pointer to go with four assists and three rebounds. Kenzie Selvaggi connected for ten points, aided by a pair of threes, while Carly George delivered eight points with seven points, making 4-of-5 shooting. Susquehanna held Shober to just seven points on the night and five rebounds and only allowed Yamirelis Matos as Wilkes' lone double-digit scorer with 14 points.

Head coach Gabby Holko's team has matched their win total from last season through just 15 games this year. Currently standing at fourth place in the Landmark Conference standings, they close out the first half of their Landmark tour hosting Juniata Wednesday at 7 p.m.
