SELINSGROVE, PA - Susquehanna women's basketball dropped a close 69-63 contest Wednesday night against undefeated No. 8 Catholic, falling just short of what would have been the visitors' first loss of the season. The River Hawks were led by
Julia Roth, who had yet another double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, as well as
Kenzie Selvaggi, who led the team with 17 points, including five makes from three-point range.
Catholic used strong shooting down the stretch to claim an 18th successive victory on the season, including 18 makes from 28 attempts at the free-throw line. As the River Hawks made one more field goal (23-22) and one more three-pointer (8-7), it was the success from the Cardinals at getting to the line that made the key difference in the game, with the River Hawks only taking 11 free throws, making nine, on the night, as Susquehanna was unable to get to the free-throw line in the second half.
The River Hawks started strong, taking an 18-13 lead after the first quarter and leading by as many as six during the first period of play.
Kaitlyn Lynch scored all 11 of her points in the first ten minutes, propelling the home side to an early lead alongside Selvaggi, who added an additional five in the first quarter.
Catholic outscored their hosts by ten points in the middle two quarters, with a 17-13 edge in the second and 20-14 advantage in the third, en route to a win.
The Cardinals gathered critical offensive rebounds down the stretch, with Anna Scoblick contributing nine offensive rebounds of her 15 total to go with 19 points on the night. Keegan Douglas led all scorers with 24 points on 8-14 from the field.
Despite a gritty performance in the final period of play, the River Hawks were undone by late buckets and offensive rebounds, and drop to 11-7 on the season and 6-5 in the Landmark Conference, good enough for fourth position in the conference with seven games to go.
The River Hawks are next in action Saturday, January 27th, for a home clash as part of a basketball doubleheader against Elizabethtown College as part of Alumni Day and the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. The men's teams will face off at 2 pm before the women tip off at 4 pm.
