GENESEO, NY - The Susquehanna University field hockey team made a trip Monday afternoon to 19th-ranked SUNY Geneseo to take on the Knights. The two sides dueled to a scoreless first three quarters before the deciding goal came early in the fourth quarter off Knight Ella Greico's stick as Geneseo took a 1-0 victory.
Senior goalkeeper
Ashley Derrick presided in goal, absorbing seven saves along with a defensive save from
Alli Kiley, as the Knights triggered 11 total shots to Susquehanna's seven. The Knights tried to move in on control of the game in the first quarter when they fired four shots, but nothing doing. Both sides dialed up the intensity as the River Hawks outshot the Knights 3-2 in shots in the second quarter, while Geneseo held a 4-3 edge in shots in the third. Ultimately it was a deflected-in shot that proved to tip the scales, as Greico got a piece of Shannon Cunningham's shot to redirect it through Derrick's legs.Â
The River Hawks were handed seven penalty corner chances to the Knights' five.
Kari Schmidt led with three shots, while Kiley had two shots and one each from
Taylor Rothermel and
Kiara Koeller.Â
With their non-conference season behind them, Susquehanna, now 8-5 overall and 4-0 in the Landmark, set its sights on completing the conference season strong in hopes of regaining the top seed in the Landmark Tournament for the second straight year. They have Goucher Tuesday night at home, followed by three straight road matchups at Moravian this Saturday, Juniata Oct. 22 and Scranton Oct. 26. They are then back home for the regular season finale against Catholic on Tuesday, Oct. 29.
