Prata, Schmidt, Schreffler Combine for Five Goals in Goucher Win

SELINSGROVE, PA - Susquehanna kept up the intensity Tuesday night in a home Landmark Conference matchup with Goucher, improving to 5-0 in league play after a 5-0 win over the Gophers. The goal scoring was thanks in part to the upperclassmen as Ashley Schreffler opened the festivities with a goal four minutes in, then a pair from Kari Schmidt and Sophia Prata. The River Hawks are 9-5 overall and maintain first place in the Landmark standings, tied with Catholic. The two teams will face off in their regular season finales on Oct. 29, but not before Susquehanna hits the road for three consecutive league games against Moravian, Juniata and Scranton.

The River Hawks let a few minutes go by before having their first breakthrough of the day on Goucher as Prata slid a ball across the cage to Schreffler who poked it in to take a 1-0 lead with 11:01 to go in the first. The score remained the same through the start of the second quarter when Susquehanna was afforded a penalty corner. After an insert from Lydia Hidlay and a blast from Alli Kiley, the ball was loose around the front of the net before Mady Quigley tapped it towards the net and Schmidt nudging it in from the back post to take a 2-0 lead. The team's third goal of the day was a beauty, as Gracie Roush earned herself a point when her delivery from the top of the arc found its way through, which Prata redirected to the left post and just out of the reach of goalie Katie Bloom to take a 3-0 lead into intermission.

Returning from the break the River Hawks swooped in for one goal apiece in the third and fourth quarter. Goal number four was another beauty as Susquehanna cashed in on another penalty corner, this time a direct hit as Hidlay inserted and Schmidt blasted it clean towards the cage and a 4-0 lead with just over six minutes left in the third. The final touches came courtesy of the scoring combination of Riley Corbett and Prata. Corbett set it in motion from the top of the arc that skipped by the Goucher defense and deflected in by Prata in front of the net for the fifth and final goal of the day.

Senior goalie Ashley Derrick got the start and pitched the shutout in a one-save day to improve to 5-4 on the year. Susquehanna outshot Goucher 19-3, including 9-1 in shots on goal. In all the River Hawks had 12 penalty corners to the Gophers' one, with Goucher getting its chance with just a few seconds left on the clock prior to commencement. Hidlay's season numbers rose to six assists, good for fourth in the Landmark, while Schmidt ranks ninth in the league with six goals and tenth with 17 points.
