ELIZABETHTOWN, PA - The Susquehanna University volleyball team waged a five-set battle Tuesday night in Landmark Conference action at Elizabethtown, twice overcoming one-set deficits with wins in the second and fourth sets. The River Hawks had their work cut out for them as the Blue Jays put the game in check with a 12-1 run to start the deciding set. Susquehanna staged a furious comeback, including a nine-point run at match point to cut E-Town's lead to 14-10. The rally effort met its end as the Blue Jays finally put the match away on a kill to take the win.
Susquehanna overcame an early 25-15 loss in game one with a close 25-23 win in set two, reaching set point at 24-19 and
Mya Durham closing the door with a kill to stop a late E-Town effort. The host Blue Jays ran off the first seven points of set three and opening up as a much as a 15-point lead in the frame towards a 25-12 victory. These River Hawks once again were resilient, overwhelming their blue-bird counterparts with a decisive 25-11 victory to reach the deciding set. Susquehanna trailed 3-0 in the fifth set before
Ryan Rorls gave the team their first point of the set with a kill. That would be their only point through nine more rallies as Elizabethtown managed six kills and one service ace in its nine-point run to lead 12-1. SU got a spark on back-to-back points off a Lucy Stanek attack error and an ensuing
Emily Kowalski kill. As Elizabethtown moved in for the kill with two straight points to lead 14-3, the River Hawks delayed any victory on E-Town's campus with a seven-point run, managed by four kills, two each from Kowalksi and
Amanda Gore, two attack errors and a ball-handling error to cut it down to 14-10. With
Keira Roach serving, the Blue Jays' Stanek put an end to things with a kill from an Emma Bitner assist to call match.
Kowalski led with a match-high 16 kills, while Rorls and Gore had seven and six, respectively. Susquehanna had seven service aces on the evening, including four from Gore to lead the contest. Gore and Roach each had three total blocks to tie for the match high, while Roach tallied 24 assists and fellow setter
Delaney McCoy registering 14. Libero
Jessica Sack led the team with 23 digs, with
Regan Kane and
Callie Wince each totaling 12 digs.
Susquehanna, now 13-12 overall and 3-2 in the Landmark, looks to put an adverse stretch behind them as they are set to host a slew of matchups this weekend, starting with Scranton Friday night at 7 p.m., then a tri-match with Drew and York (Pa.) on Saturday starting at 12 noon as part of Homecoming Weekend.Â
