BALTIMORE, MD - After a rough stretch of Landmark Conference games, the Susquehanna University men's soccer team knew that Wednesday night's meeting at Goucher could be the lift they needed to get out of their slump. Both sides toiled through a scoreless first 77 minutes and a close shot count between the River Hawks' 13 and the Gophers' nine. It was Susquehanna's seventh shot on goal that made all the difference as Tommy O'Keefe put SU up off an assist from
Josh Higgins in the 78th minute for a 1-nil win, improving to 7-4-3 overall and 2-3 in the Landmark.
Goalie
Santiago Andino got the start for the River Hawks in a four-save performance to improve to 2-3 on the year. He made two of those saves in the final 12 minutes to preserve the victory. Susquehanna got its score when they moved the ball down the left side and to an open Higgins. An opportunistic O'Keefe made his presence known at the top of the box, gathering a one-hopper off the left foot of Higgins and sent a right-footer to the bottom right quadrant of the net for the decisive score. It was O'Keefe's fifth goal of the season to tie for second on the team with
Hayden Swinehart and stands third on the team with 13 points. The River Hawks led 7-4 in shots on goal and had five corner kick chances to Goucher's three.
The Wednesday-night win put Susquehanna back in the win column, something that had eluded them since late September's 5-nil victory over Wilkes in their Landmark opener. With four regular-season matches remaining the River Hawks look to finish strong, starting with a three-match homestand with Moravian on the slate for Saturday as part of Homecoming Weekend at 6:30 p.m. They then have Juniata Wednesday, Oct. 23 and Scranton Saturday, Oct. 26. Their regular-season finale features traveling to Drew on Saturday, Nov. 2.
