SUFH Suffers Overtime Defeat at Haverford

HAVERFORD, PA – A late fourth-quarter rally for Susquehanna Field Hockey ended abruptly in the overtime period Wednesday night as the host Haverford Fords walked it off with a 2-1 non-conference victory.

The game played to a scoreless first half as steady defense kept both the River Hawks and the Fords with just three shots and two penalty corners apiece. SUFH goalie Taytum Lombardi got the start, recording eight saves on the evening, while Haverford goalie Mary Smith had three. Haverford eventually broke through, connecting for a third-quarter goal when Naomi York deflected in a blast from Louis Coughlin off a penalty corner to give the hosts the lead. With just over three minutes remaining in the game, Susquehanna was called on to administer the penalty corner. Lydia Hidlay inserted, followed by Emma Campitelli passing it over to Kari Schmidt, whose slapshot was met by Smith. The ball continued to roll around the front of the cage before Taylor Rothermel had a few chances at it, then finally slapping it through to force overtime at the 57-minute mark.

The smaller field of players took a bit of adjusting, but Haverford got a chance with a penalty corner with five-and-a-half minutes remaining in the first OT. Holly Vincent received the insert, and after missing it initially regrouped and moved past a defender to get the ball on line. The ball headed towards Erica Pardon's stick who passed it through to give Haverford the victory.

The Fords finished with 15 shots on the night to Susquehanna's 7, including a 10-4 lead in shots on goal, along with a 12-4 lead in penalty corners.
Susquehanna, now 5-4 on the season, heads back on the Landmark Conference trail where they are 2-0 in league play so far this year as they play host to Lycoming on Saturday at 1 p.m. from Sassafras Field.
