SELINSGROVE, PA - Susquehanna University men's tennis took their unbeaten 5-0 record into Homecoming on Saturday with a Landmark Conference contest against fellow unbeaten Catholic. Despite a three doubles victory from
Nathan Bassett and
Austin Imhoof by a 7-5 score, the River Hawks were beaten out in the doubles competition by the Cardinals with matching 6-2 scores in games one and two to pick up the point. It proved to be the deciding factor as Catholic carried out three singles victory to take the 4-3 conference victory, its first of the season. Susquehanna ends the fall leg of its season with a strong 5-1 mark and 1-1 in conference play when the team resumes play this spring.
First-year and reigning Landmark Athlete of the Week
Logan Rauschenberger overcame his one doubles defeat by defeating CUA's Lorenzo Neri by a 6-0 and 6-4 score. His doubles mate
Tyler Hester did the same by taking out Ben Perks in four singles by narrow 6-4 and 7-5 decisions.
Owen Miller also hit the comeback trail in singles, beatin Diego Romo 6-4 and 6-2 after he and two doubles partner
Daniel Murphy came up short in their matchup. The Cardinals, though, won three to stabilize their victory as their James Earwood defeated
Thomas Hallahan in two singles 6-2 and 6-1 and Drew Andrianopoulos taking down
Gavin Ream in six singles, 6-1 and 6-0. The five singles match was the game to watch as it went down to the wire in three frames. SU's
Nathan Bassett took the first game, 6-4, but CUA's Henry Ogden made it Catholic's day by winning the final two frames, 6-3 and 6-4.
The River Hawks achieved their best fall start since going 4-1 in the 2021-22 campaign and 5-0 in 2018-19. Their highlights this fall included shutout wins over Marywood and Penn College to start the season, along with 6-1 victories over Misericordia and McDaniel, along with a 4-3 Landmark win over Elizabethtown.
